In northern Hesse, Schwebda Castle is a historic moated castle with a history dating back to the 13th century. Although it was redesigned in the 16th century, a significant part of its original structure has been preserved to this day and is privately owned.

The origins of Schwebda Castle likely date back to the period between 1243 and 1269, when the Knights of Schwebda appeared as its builders. In 1297, they transferred their property as a fief to the Lords of Bilstein. After the extinction of the Bilstein family, the castle passed to the Landgraves of Hesse in 1301.
