In the Euskirchen district of Schweinheim is Burg Schweinheim, a former moated castle. It is notable for the discovery of the first identifiable German piggy bank, which contained medieval coins and allegedly belonged to a knight named Spies von Büllesheim.

History+

Little is known about the early history of Burg Schweinheim. A mention from 1333 refers to a house, a farm, the village, and a court named “Schweinheim” as a fief of the County of Jülich. The original complex was a two-part moated castle surrounded by ditches. In the 19th century, most of the outer bailey was demolished, leaving only a corner tower and some wall remnants. Subsequently, the site developed into a large agricultural estate.
