Seebenstein Castle in Lower Austria combines two construction phases: an older section from the 13th/14th century and a younger high castle from the 15th to 17th centuries.

History+

The origins of Seebenstein Castle date back to approximately 1045, when Gottfried von Wels-Lambach founded it. Around 1049, it passed into the possession of the Formbacher family. After the Formbachers died out in the 12th century, the Wildensteiner family took over the complex. In 1170, a Kdolz von Seebenstein is mentioned for the first time in documents. The castle saw numerous changes in ownership, including the Liechtensteins in the 14th century, the Seebeckers from 1403 to 1432, and from 1432, the Königsbergers. The latter played a significant role in the construction of the present high castle, which withstood a siege by the Turks in 1683.
