Seinsfeld Castle

Seinsfeld Castle, also known as Hellermannsfeld Castle, dates back to a lowland castle located at 440 m above sea level, north of the municipality of Seinsfeld in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The exact time of the water castle's construction is unknown. It was first mentioned in a document in 1325, when it was transferred by King John of Bohemia to Count Arnold von Blankenheim.

The oldest structural remains of the castle date from the 15th century. Large parts were rebuilt in the 17th to 18th centuries.

In 1794, Baron Ernst von Berg sold the castle to the notary Lothar München from Dudeldorf. In 1817, Mr. Duvain acquired it, and in 1817, Messrs. Carl Leist and Heinrich Carl Hellermann from Meisenheim owned the castle, which was now also called Hellermannsfeld Castle. In 1890, the west wing of the castle was demolished. From 1920, the castle was owned by Heinrich Josef Leist.

Around 1935 and 1949, the west wing of the castle was rebuilt. After the Second World War, it served as a children's convalescent home. Today, the castle is privately owned and inhabited.

The castle complex, surrounded by a moat up to 17 m wide and 6 m deep with an outer, partly still visible rampart, is almost circular with a diameter of 60 m.

On the north side, there are still 2.50 m thick outer walls with internal arched niches where a closed battlement with loopholes led to the defensive tower in the west of the castle. On the east side, the abutments of a drawbridge, now replaced by a stone bridge, can still be seen, and two gravestones are embedded in the stair tower in the inner courtyard.
