Sievernich Castle

In Sievernich, a district of Vettweiß in the Düren district, is Burg Sievernich, a moated castle. Located directly on the Neffelbach, the complex has a regular structure with a three-winged main castle and a three-winged outer bailey, whose main building fabric dates primarily from the 15th to 18th centuries.

History+

The first documented mention of Burg Sievernich occurred in 1153, when Heinrich von Sievernich was named as the lord of the castle. After the extinction of the von Sievernich family after 1456, the estate came into the possession of Beatrix von Petersheim at the beginning of the 15th century. Through her marriage to Richard II von Merode in 1410, the castle became the property of the Merode family for about 250 years. Later, it changed hands through the marriage of Judith von Merode to Cornelius van Gent. In 1674, their daughter Maria married Bertram von Quadt-Wickrath. Around 1780, this family sold the castle to the von Wylich family.
