Sinzenich Castle

A noble family of Sinzenich is documented as owners of the castle between the 13th and 15th centuries. From 1374, the Lords of Gertzen took over the property and were enfeoffed with it by the duke from 1380. In 1500, Sinzenich was elevated to a sub-lordship, and Wirich von Gertzen, known as Sinzenich, the first sub-lord, began an expansion of the castle. After the death of the last Lord of Sinzenich, Johann von Gertzen, the castle passed to his son-in-law Arnold von Elverfeld in 1653 through his heiress daughter Agnes. In 1667, Johann Heinrich von Holtrop zu Irnich, the son-in-law, received the property. A severe earthquake in 1755 significantly damaged the castle, leading to the collapse of the manor house in 1769, which was not rebuilt thereafter. The von Mosbach family began building a new manor house next to the ruin, but it remained unfinished.
