Staufenberg Castle

Although no structural elements from the 11th or 12th centuries survive, the castle's construction is attributed to the Lords or Counts of Staufenberg, mentioned in documents between 1188 and 1132. The ministeriales of the Dukes of Zähringen, appearing from 1148, are also considered potential builders. After 1218, the castle changed hands multiple times and at one point housed up to eight families as a joint inheritance castle. It sustained damage during the Thirty Years' War and was last plundered by French troops in 1689. In 1693, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden acquired the complex. From 1832 onwards, the Margraves of Baden converted the castle into a palace in the Romantic style.
