Sülz Castle

The founding of Burg Sülz is dated to around 700 AD, but its first documented mention occurred only in 1075 by Archbishop Anno II. Previously, the property belonged to the Count Palatine, who gifted it after 1064 to the newly founded Siegburg Abbey, which owned it for over three centuries. Between 1396 and 1401, the castle passed to the Staël von Holstein family, whose male line died out in the mid-16th century. Subsequently, Adolf von Bellinghausen inherited the estate, which in 1582 passed to the von Zweiffel family through marriage. Helene von Zweiffel married Reinart von Hillen in 1641, with whom she lived at Burg Sülz until 1670. Their grandchildren sold the castle in 1766 to Johann Paul La Valette St. George, who had the medieval buildings demolished to erect new ones, though only the southwestern wing was realized.
