Sulzberg Castle (Untereggen)

The origins of Sulzberg Castle date back to the early 13th century, when the imposing keep was erected around 1230. The first known inhabitants were the Lords of Sulzberg, who entered the service of the Bishop of Constance in the mid-13th century and from here managed their lands and served as judicial lords. With Rudolf V, the Sulzberg lineage died out in 1396. The castle subsequently changed hands several times, including the Meier, Schub, Gnäpser, and Mötteli families. The latter acquired the entire complex around 1490 and carried out extensive renovations. In the 16th century, Sulzberg came into the possession of the Studer von Winkelbach family through marriage, and later the Rugg von Tannegg family. In 1649, Jakob Hädener acquired the castle, followed by Rudolf von Salis in 1667. As the von Salis family owned a more comfortable residence, the castle gradually fell into disrepair and was already a ruin by 1713. A partial reconstruction took place only in 1784, making the castle habitable and adding a mansard roof to the tower. After further changes of ownership, the castle was renovated and rebuilt several times in the 20th century, with a comprehensive restoration respecting the historical building fabric occurring in 1985.

Sulzberg Castle is located in Untereggen, in the Rorschach district, Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 539 m above sea level.

Today, Sulzberg Castle is privately owned. The over 20-meter-high keep from the early 13th century is well preserved, as is the palas built to the southeast, which was modified in the 15th and 16th centuries. The complex is surrounded by a large garden and a nature reserve with three ponds.
