Tannenburg Castle (Nentershausen)

The origins of Tannenburg Castle date back to the 14th century, when it was built on the foundations of an older fortification. This predecessor, which had long been abandoned, was located on the "old hill". In 1348, the castle was first mentioned in a document as "das hus tzu deme Thannberg". The von Baumbach family received the castle as a fief from the Abbot of Hersfeld and held jurisdiction in Nentershausen and the surrounding villages. In the 14th century, the castle became embroiled in the turmoil of the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession and served the Hessian Landgrave as a defensive outpost against the Landgraves of Thuringia. The city of Erfurt also concluded a protection treaty with the Baumbachs to secure its merchants on the nearby old trade route.
