Teck Castle

The earliest documented mention of Teck Castle dates back to 1152 in a treaty between Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and Duke Konrad of Zähringen. The Zähringers, originally settled in this region, transferred ownership from 1187 to a younger sideline, who subsequently called themselves Dukes of Teck. Financial difficulties led the Dukes to sell half of the castle to the Habsburgs in 1303 and the other half to the Counts of Württemberg in 1381. In the 15th century, the line of the Dukes of Teck died out, and their ducal title passed to the Counts of Württemberg in 1495. The original castle was completely destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. Duke Karl Alexander of Württemberg planned in 1736 to expand the ruin into a modern fortress, but the work ended prematurely in 1737 with his death.
