Torpa Castle

Although mentioned in historical records as early as the late 14th century, Torpa was not officially documented as a manor until 1481. At that time, the Privy Councillor Arvid Knutsson resided there, who likely had the stone castle built around 1500 as a defensive structure against the Danes. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle underwent various alterations. Katharina Stenbock, the third wife of Gustav Vasa, hailed from Torpa.

Today, Torpa Castle serves as a museum. The castle features four floors connected by two separate staircases within the masonry. The Knights' Hall with its original furnishings and the Baroque castle chapel are noteworthy. On the fourth floor, traces of a bricked-up staircase to a possible fifth floor or a defensive passage have also been discovered. The first two floors each house two vaulted rooms of different sizes, while the third and fourth floors each comprise a single large room, with the fourth floor having the most windows.
