Trausnitz Castle

Presumably built in the mid-13th century by the Lords of Walthurn, Trausnitz Castle was first documented in 1261. Around 1280, it came into the possession of the Wittelsbach family. The castle gained fame through the 28-month imprisonment of Frederick the Fair of Austria after the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322. Emperor Louis the Bavarian handed over the defeated Habsburg to his vicedom Weichnand, who had previously received the castle as a fief. After his death without male heirs, ownership changed between the Zenger, Punzinger, and Wiltinger families, until the Zengers became the sole owners. From the mid-16th century, members of the von Sparneck family are also documented at the castle. A fire in 1689 caused damage. In 1700, a new palace was built next to the castle.
