Ulferts Börg Castle

The origins of Ulferts Börg Castle date back to around 1430, when the oldest parts, the approximately 15-meter-wide front house with its massive outer walls, were constructed. A bricked-up loophole in the west gable indicates its former defensive function. In the historical Brookmerland, medieval castles were rare, as the Brokmer Willküren prohibited the construction of stone houses over 12 meters high and surrounding moats. Only after this legal code lost its significance did local chieftain families begin to erect multi-story brick residential towers. With the rise of the Cirksena, the local nobility lost influence. Around 1700, an agricultural section in Gulfhof construction was added to the stone house, and in the 18th century, it was expanded with a large entrance hall featuring a Baroque portal, into which the coats of arms of the families ter Braeck and von Briesen were incorporated.
