Vellberg Castle, also known as the Lower Castle, is a hilltop castle on a rocky spur above a loop of the Bühler river. It is a defining element of the triangular town layout of Vellberg in the district of Schwäbisch Hall.

History+

The origins of Vellberg Castle date back to around 1200, when it was built by the Lords of Vellberg. In the 15th century, the Knights of Vellberg expanded the complex along with the hamlet in front of it into a fortress and a market, which became the center of their dominion. The castle suffered destruction in 1523. At that time, Wilhelm von Vellberg supported the robber knight Hans Thomas von Absberg, who kidnapped merchants and demanded ransoms.
