Vellinghausen Castle

Vellinghausen Castle is located in the Vellinghausen-Eilmsen district of the municipality of Welver in the Soest district of North Rhine-Westphalia and is one of the sights along the Roman Route.

The lowland castle was built around 1300 by Rötger von Galen, who also called himself Vellinchusen, presumably on the site of a predecessor castle.

After the brothers Heinrich and Dieter von Galen divided their inheritance in 1564 and 1566, the castle came to Heinrich von Galen and his wife Clara von Vridag, who presumably completed the castle in 1598, as indicated by a Renaissance fireplace on the ground floor. On February 20, 1569, their daughter Dorothea brought the castle into her marriage with Johann von Neheim.

In 1700, General Heinrich von Neheim sold the estate to Kaspar Heinrich von Voss, who was married to Margareta von Korff-Schmising. The east facade and the half-hipped roof were adapted to the Baroque style, and the entrance portal was adorned with the double coat of arms of the building couple.

Not far from the castle, the Battle of Vellinghausen took place in 1761 during the Seven Years' War.

Today, the castle is privately owned.
