Villach Castle

Villach Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1270. It was probably built around 1233 as part of the fortification of the city of Villach and formed its northeastern corner. It served as the seat of the Bamberg administrator. Remains of a fortification tower in the northeastern corner of the complex are still preserved in the masonry from the original construction. The existing Renaissance building was erected in the 16th century and rebuilt several times until the 17th century. The simple, three-story, four-winged building has an arcaded courtyard. Today, the castle is used for social housing. Only in one room, an outpost of the Villach City Museum, are archaeological finds displayed.
