Vischering Castle

Vischering Castle was built in 1271 under Bishop Gerhard von der Mark. It subsequently served as the ancestral seat of the Droste zu Vischering, a noble family from Westphalia, who were also hereditary stewards to the Prince-Bishop of Münster. Originally designed as a purely defensive structure until 1521, the castle was destroyed by fire in that year. During its reconstruction on the existing foundations, it gained residential features such as windows and a Renaissance bay window, yet retained elements like drawbridges, gatehouses, and moats. A keep, mentioned in 1414, no longer exists today; a paved circle in the inner courtyard marks its former location.
