In the municipality of Straelen on the left bank of the Niers river is Vlassrath Castle, also known as Haus Vlassrath. Originally a medieval knight's seat, the complex underwent reconstruction after a fire in the early 17th century, acquiring its present appearance.

History+

The exact foundation date of Vlassrath Castle is unknown, but as early as the first half of the 14th century, a nearby mill owned by Kleve bailiff Wolter von Wossum suggests the existence of a fortified residence. A document from 1390, issued by Wolter's daughter Sophia and her husband Engelbert von Orsbeck, explicitly mentions their house and outer bailey at Vlassrath. From 1432, Vlassrath was a Guelders fief. In 1441, Engelbert von Brempt became the owner, with Sophia retaining usufruct rights. The von Brempt family owned the castle for generations.
