Burg Vondern, a moated castle, rises in the Osterfeld district of Oberhausen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Its structure offers insights into construction phases from the Late Gothic to the Baroque period, and now serves as a cultural venue.

History+

The first documented mention of Burg Vondern as a fief of the Counts of Kleve dates to the 13th century. The name “Vondern” derives from the Middle High German word for a narrow footbridge over water. In the early 15th century, the complex passed to the von Loë family through marriage, who remodeled the outer bailey around 1520. After the male line of the Loë family died out, the castle passed to the von Willich family, later to the von Bremt family, and in the 18th century to the Counts of Nesselrode.
