Wachenheim Castle

The existence of a castle in Wachenheim has been documented since 1324. At that time, a knight Dietz von Wachenheim transferred his feudal rights to Count Palatine Adolf. In 1336, Gerhard von Wachenheim enfeoffed his property to Archbishop Balduin of Luxembourg. The existing complex, often referred to as the Upper Castle, was built around 1471 or 1480, with the residential tower considered the oldest part. Ownership rights changed hands among noble families such as the von der Leyen and Leiningen-Westerburg. At the end of the 18th century, the castle passed to the von Botzheim family.
