Wasserburg Castle
Wasserburg Castle, also known as Wasserburg Palace, is a water castle-like complex in the town of Wasserburg am Inn, Auf der Burg 3, in the district of Rosenheim in Bavaria. However, it is not a water castle in the strict sense, as the castle complex and the town below it are only 7/8 surrounded by water. In terms of type, it is more akin to a spur or ridge castle.
Nothing is known about the early history of the castle complex. According to a document now recognized as a forgery, Hallgraf Engelbert von Attel moved his ancestral seat from Limburg Castle to his already existing Wasserburg in the mid-12th century. In 1247, the castle and town of Wasserburg were conquered after a 17-week siege by Duke Ludwig (later Ludwig II the Strict). Since then, Wasserburg has been a Wittelsbach possession.
Complex and Building History+
In 1415, the castle's outwork was reinforced, in 1465 the castle chapel St. Aegidius with a pointed helmeted tower was built, and in 1475 the keep was rebuilt. From 1526 to 1537, the castle was expanded into a late Gothic palace, a three-story building with a monumental gabled roof and stepped gables (1526 conversion of the ducal granary). In 1779, the keep was demolished, in 1809 the moats were filled in, and in 1870 further extensions took place.
Today, the palace houses part of the Surveying Office and a retirement home of the Maria Stern Monastery.
