Welterode Castle (Eitorf)

The first documented mention of Welterode Castle dates back to 1249, when Mechthild, the widowed Countess of Sayn, transferred properties near the castle to Herchen Monastery. In 1289, the castle was owned by the city of Cologne. A Friedrich von Welteroide was mentioned in 1404, who reconciled with the city of Cologne. The current building, whose origins date back at least to the 16th century, was long owned by the Counts of Nesselrode-Ehreshoven. In the 18th century, residents such as Peter Ennenbach (1712) and Henricus Barrig (1730), who also served as the castle's administrator, are documented.
