Wettin Castle, also known as Wettin Palace, is a historic castle complex in Wettin-Löbejün in the Saalekreis district, Saxony-Anhalt. As the ancestral seat of the Margraves, Electors, and Kings of Saxony, the House of Wettin, it houses a school and a boarding school.

History+

Its first mention as “Vitin civitas” appears in a document from Emperor Otto I in 961. In the 10th century, Dedo was enfeoffed with the County of Wettin, and from 1091, Conrad the Great resided at the castle. Archaeological findings confirm the existence of a castle as early as the 10th century, which was reinforced by a ring wall around 1100. In the 12th century, the Upper and Lower Castles were developed as separate complexes. After the Wettin line died out in 1217, the county passed to the Archbishop of Magdeburg in 1288. The castle was repeatedly divided and enfeoffed. In the 17th century, the Upper Castle suffered damage in a town fire, and its keep was demolished.
