Wiesentfels Castle

The history of Wiesentfels Castle dates back to 1333, when Knight Albert von Giech received the complex as a fief from the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg. The Giech family shaped the castle's destiny for centuries. In 1412, a large part of the castle, known as Unterwiesentfels, was granted to Heinz von Schaumberg, while Hans II. von Giech received a third as Oberwiesentfels in 1415. After the Hussite Wars in 1433, Oberwiesentfels was described as destroyed and disappeared from records in 1467. A reconstruction of the castle took place between 1476 and 1481. In 1487, Otto and Dietz von Giech received half of the new complex as a fief. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was burned down by rebellious farmers but was rebuilt in its original style by Count Achaz von Giech.
