Wil Castle

The origins of Wil Castle date back to the 12th century, when the Lords of Toggenburg established the estate as a castle and administrative center. In 1226, the complex passed into the hands of the Abbots of St. Gallen, who used it as an external residence until the dissolution of the monastery. Over the centuries, the estate served various purposes: from a defensive tower for the Toggenburgers to a palatinate for the Prince-Abbots, and even a brewery from 1815 to 1982. In 1978, the estate was placed under federal protection, and in 1990, it was classified as a structure of national importance due to its historical, architectural, and artistic value. The “Stiftung Hof zu Wil” (Wil Estate Foundation), established in 1990, acquired the complex with the aim of preserving its building fabric and making it accessible to the public. Following extensive restoration work, the estate was reopened in March 1998.

Wil Castle is located in Schlosswil, in the district of Wil, in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It stands at an elevation of approximately 598 meters above sea level.

Today, Wil Castle houses a restaurant. It is a well-preserved historical monument that, after extensive restorations, is accessible to the public.
