Wildeck Castle

The origins of Wildeck Castle lie in the High Middle Ages, when it was presumably built by the Lords of Heinriet. In 1492, the castle passed into the possession of Ludwig, the progenitor of the third line of the Counts of Löwenstein. Viticulture was already practiced on the estate in the 16th century. After changing ownership and destruction during the Peasants' War in 1525, followed by reconstruction, the castle became the property of the Württemberg state in 1933. Since 1940, it has served as an experimental estate for the Weinsberg Viticulture School, where grape varieties such as Samtrot and Dornfelder were bred.
