Windeck Castel

The origins of Windeck Castle date back to before 1150, when Herdegen I von Winternheim had the central square keep built. An expansion of the castle district took place around 1209 by his son Herdegen II, who laid out walls and moats. Further extensions, including the creation of a castle moat, are documented between 1211 and 1234. The Lords of Winternheim, later known as the Lords of Winterau, inhabited the castle until their lineage died out in the second half of the 14th century. In the 15th century, the exact ownership history is unclear, but in the 16th century, it served as the residence of archiepiscopal officials. After 1650, the castle passed into the possession of the Barons of Bockenheim for about 150 years.
