Winnenthal Castle, a historic moated castle in the Birten district of Xanten, is a structure on the Lower Rhine. Its strategically important location on the former border between the Cleves and Electoral Cologne territories gave it significance in the Middle Ages. Today, the complex houses a senior residence, thus combining history with modern use.

The origins of Winnenthal Castle date back to the first half of the 14th century, when it was probably built by the Counts of Jülich. In the 15th century, the complex experienced its heyday under Duke Adolf II of Cleves, who had it rebuilt and expanded. His son Johann and his wife Elisabeth of Burgundy resided in the castle during this period. After passing to the Wylich family in the 16th century, Winnenthal served as a fief for over 150 years.
