Museum

Wolfhagen Castle is a partially ruined castle in the small town of Wolfhagen (Ritterstraße 1) in the district of Kassel (Hesse).

According to current research, the castle and town of Wolfhagen were founded between 1230 and 1231, presumably as a predatory foundation by the Ludowingians on what was then Mainz territory. According to a presentation by the Wolfhagen Local History and Heritage Association, the town founded by Konrad von Thüringen was initially surrounded by a rampart, moat, and palisades.

Soon, however, this fortification was replaced by a stone wall one meter thick and 4 to 6 meters high with a parapet walk, which was completed in 1302, so that a complete fortification enclosed the town. The town's fortifications included eleven towers.

Wolfhagen Castle was not explicitly mentioned until 1246, with a new building apparently constructed in 1513. Thereafter, the castle still appears as a place of jurisdiction.

However, by the end of the 16th century, the castle fell into disrepair and was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century, with the octagonal keep being pulled down first in 1606. Only remnants of the curtain wall, parts of an attached castle building, remnants of the gate tower, and the barrel cellar have been preserved.

Since 1980, the "Regionalmuseum Wolfhager Land" has been located in the former tithe barn, completely rebuilt in 1920, and the former Renthof from the late 17th century. Both buildings were predominantly constructed with stone material from the old castle, and the core of the Renthof contains the castle's gate tower and a part of the curtain wall.
