In the town of Wolkenstein in the Erzgebirgskreis district of Saxony stands a High Middle Ages complex, Wolkenstein Castle. Situated on a rocky outcrop, approximately 80 meters above the Zschopau Valley, it once protected an important trade route to Bohemia.

History+

First documented in the 13th century, Wolkenstein Castle was originally the seat of the Lords of Waldenburg, who, as ministeriales of the German king, administered the Pleißenland region. From 1378, Wolkenstein became the main residence of this family. After the Waldenburg line died out in 1473, the castle fell to the Wettin dynasty. Around 1500, Henry the Pious took possession of the complex and had it converted into a hunting lodge.
