Ziegenrück Castle, a historic complex of the Kemenate type, stands on a rocky spur above the town of the same name in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia. It once monitored a river crossing.

History+

First documented in 1222, Ziegenrück Castle was part of the imperial estate complex of Saalfeld and served to secure a Saale river crossing for a north-south connection. Originally owned by the Count of Orlamünde, it passed to the Landgrave of Thuringia at the beginning of the 14th century. Vogt Heinrich II Reuß von Plauen was also a temporary owner.
