Zieverich Castle

The origins of Burg Zieverich date back to the late 13th century, when Giselbertus de Ceverich, a follower of Count Gerhard of Jülich, founded the knight's seat. In the 19th century, the property changed hands and came into the possession of the Cologne industrialist family Langen. Johann Gottlieb von Langen commissioned architects Emil Schreiterer and Bernhard Below to add castle-like elements. In 1952, the foundation of Pastor Jakob van Gils acquired the complex to establish an orphanage. During renovation work in 1956, a fire destroyed large parts of the manor, including an annex from 1896. After a partial reconstruction, the planned home was nevertheless opened, with the original outer walls and window axes of the rectangular floor plan being preserved.
