Zrinski Castle
Zrinski Castle is a significant historical structure in northern Croatia, near the center of Čakovec. It is the largest castle in Međimurje County and owes its name to the Zrinski noble family, who owned it for over 150 years and significantly shaped its appearance.
History+
Throughout its history, Zrinski Castle changed hands multiple times. Prominent owners included the Dukes of Lacković, the Counts of Cilli, the Counts of Ernušt, the Counts of Feštetić, and the Counts of Althan. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle played a crucial role as an important defensive point against the advancing Ottomans, as it was located within the historical military frontier. During this period, it was expanded into a modern fortress with a moat and bastions. Further renovations took place in later years. In the 17th century, the castle housed the famous Bibliotheca Zriniana, the extensive book collection of the Croatian Ban Nikolaus Zrinski.
