The Burgkirche Ingelheim, an impressive late Gothic fortified church, is located in Ober-Ingelheim in the Mainz-Bingen district, Rhineland-Palatinate. It is considered one of the best-preserved fortified sacred buildings in Southern and Western Germany and served as a safe refuge for the population in the Middle Ages. Today, it is a landmark of the city.

History+

The origins of the Burgkirche date back to the 7th century, when a Frankish cemetery chapel existed on this site. In the 12th century, a Romanesque predecessor building was erected, of which only the tower remains today. The current late Gothic church was completed in several construction phases up to the first half of the 15th century, replacing the Romanesque structure. It was surrounded by a medieval defensive system that offered protection to the population. Over the centuries, it also served as a burial place for nobles and the ground floor of the tower as an archive. Between 1998 and 2006, the Burgkirche underwent extensive restoration, including the valuable Marian window in the choir.
