Hüntel Burgmannshof

Hüntel Burgmannshof

To be privately owned

The Hüntelhof, a Burgmannshof of the von Hüntel family, is located at Ritterstraße 5 in Haselünne, Emsland, Lower Saxony, among four neighboring farms on the former northern city wall. After the abandonment of the episcopal state castle, the Burgmannen settled in the city from 1346/47. Of around twenty-two attested farms, seven remain.

The core dates from the second half of the 14th century: cellar masonry with four loopholes and excavated foundations of a stone building, probably belonging to the von Swartewolt family. The seat was first mentioned in 1590, then in the possession of Claus von Langen auf Westkreyenborg. In 1644, a keep was attested. In 1664, the farm and keep were sold to the Lingen rent master Adrian Pinninck; after his death in 1679, they passed to the physician Caspar Buchholz. Later owners included the namesake von Hüntel (until 1789). From 1821, the farm belonged to the merchant family Russell, and since 1893 to the Berentzen family (today Berentzen-Hoyer). It was extensively rebuilt, especially in the late 18th century.

The current rectangular house incorporates the northern narrow side into the old city wall. A large hall is located at the north end of the ground floor.
