Affenstein Castle

Affenstein Castle

The remains of the castle can be visited

Affenstein Castle is located near Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg in the district of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Location+

The castle site is presumed to be on the difficult-to-access, southwestern steep slope of the Rheingrafenstein. It lies approximately halfway between Rheingrafenstein Castle and the Nahe (river). It thus belonged to the category of hillside castles and was probably an outwork of Rheingrafenstein Castle.

A documentary mention of Affenstein Castle is only known from the year 1426. There, the castle is named as Affensteine under Ringravensteine. Henne von Lonsheim and Johann von Wonsheim are named as co-owners of the castle, which was under the fiefdom of the Rheingrafschaft. Nothing is known about the destruction of the castle, but it was probably related to the destruction of Rheingrafenstein Castle in 1688.

Condition of Preservation+

The few remaining wall remnants are made of rubble stone. A visit is difficult due to the topographical location.
