Affenstein Castle
The castle remains of Affenstein, a former hilltop castle, are located in Rhineland-Palatinate, near Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. It is presumed to have functioned as an outwork of the nearby Rheingrafenstein Castle.
History+
The first and only known documentary mention of Affenstein Castle dates back to 1426. In this document, it is referred to as “Affensteine unter Ringravensteine”. Henne von Lonsheim and Johann von Wonsheim are named as co-owners of the castle, which was under the feudal lordship of the Rheingrafschaft. Although no precise details about the castle's destruction exist, it is presumed to be connected with the destruction of Rheingrafenstein Castle in 1688.

The few remaining wall fragments of the castle ruin are constructed from rubble stone. Access to the site is challenging.
