The Alte Burg in Bad Münstereifel is a ring fort, serving as the remnant of a Carolingian fortification. Originally designed as a refuge castle, it offered protection to the population and secured a subsidiary monastery of Prüm Abbey.

History+

The defensive structure was built in the 9th century and constructed in at least two building periods. Archaeological investigations in 1972 uncovered 9th-century pottery fragments with roulette decoration. In the 19th century, a silver coin of Louis the Pious is said to have been discovered in the foundation of a round tower, but it is no longer extant.
