Alte Burg Castle

The Alte Burg (also Alte Burg im Quecken or Alte Burg "am Quecken") in Bad Münstereifel is a ring wall, the remains of a fortification from the Carolingian era. The refuge served as a retreat for the population and for the protection of the subsidiary monastery of Prüm Abbey. The 9th-century defensive structure is protected as an archaeological monument.

The spur castle complex is located northeast of the city center on a mountain spur, the second Quecken, above the Erft valley east of federal highway 51 at an altitude of 315 to 363 meters. It is 300 m long and 80 m wide, plus the outworks. The complex was built in at least two construction periods. In the northeast there is a motte.

In the highest part, the rubble stone foundation of a round tower is preserved. A silver coin of Louis the Pious is said to have been found there in the 19th century, but it has not been preserved. In 1972, parts of the complex were archaeologically investigated. During this, 9th-century pottery shards with roulette decoration were discovered.
