The Altenburg castle remains, a former motte, lie on a rock formation on the outskirts of Blankenheimerdorf, a district of Blankenheim. This site in North Rhine-Westphalia once provided protection in a marshy valley.

History+

The origins of the Altenburg likely date back to the 10th century, when the up to 25-meter-high and 100-meter-long rock was artificially prepared to accommodate a fortification. The castle was demonstrably inhabited from the 13th to the 15th century. Its original function was to protect the nearby village of Blankenheim. Although the castle was considered impregnable, expansions were not possible due to its location.
