The remains of the castle can be visited

The Berneck castle remains, a former hilltop castle, are on the Albtrauf above Deggingen. Although only sparse remnants can be seen today, the site offers a glimpse into medieval fortifications.

History+

The construction of Berneck Castle is dated to around the year 1250. Its first documented mention occurred in 1288, naming Count Konrad von Kirchberg as the owner. It is believed that the castle was already abandoned around 1350. A document from 1372 already referred to Berneck as a 'Burgstall', indicating the decay of the complex. In 1435, the castle site passed into the possession of the Counts of Helfenstein. It is presumed that Berneck always stood in the shadow of the larger Hiltenburg Castle, which also belonged to the Helfensteins.
