Berneck Castle
The castle ruin Berneck is a former hilltop castle in Deggingen in the district of Göppingen. In the 19th century, the Buschel Chapel was built within the old defensive complex. Not far from the village of Berneck, which belongs to Deggingen in the district of Göppingen, lies the former hilltop castle Berneck on the Albtrauf above Deggingen. The castle site is located at an altitude of 746 meters. An Albverein path leads from the village to the castle site in 5 minutes.
The castle was built around 1250. In 1288, it was first mentioned in a document, naming Count Konrad von Kirchberg von Berneck. Around 1350, the castle was probably already abandoned. A document from 1372 names Peter von Berneck in Deggingen and Hans von Berneck in Ditzenbach; the castle is already referred to as a castle site in it. In 1435, the castle site was owned by the Counts of Helfenstein. The castle probably stood in the shadow of the neighboring Hiltenburg Castle, which also belonged to the Count of Helfenstein.
Complex+
Of the castle site itself, only two mighty concentrically arranged neck ditches and overgrown wall remains can still be seen. On the inner castle area stands the Buschel Chapel, built in 1847. The area of the core castle measures approximately 50 x 40 meters, the entire castle grounds occupy an area of 70 x 70 meters.
Buschel Chapel+
The Buschel Chapel, built in 1847, is located on the castle grounds. In 1860, permission to celebrate Holy Mass in the chapel was granted by the episcopal ordinariate of Rottenburg. The chapel houses a life-size Madonna from around 1730.
