Berus Castle

Berus Castle was built at the latest by the beginning of the 13th century, as it was first mentioned in a document in 1235 as "Bellus Ramus." Its primary purpose was to protect the Lorraine possessions and the escort road between Wallerfangen and Bolchen. The castle was the ancestral seat of the noble family von Beres, traceable until 1433. Later, it passed as a Lorraine fief to the von Alben family, who called themselves von Alben, named Beris. From the 14th to the 17th century, several knightly families were also resident in Berus, including the von Haraucourt. At the end of the 16th century, the town and castle of Berus were extensively refortified; the structural remains visible today date from this period.
