Blankenberg Castle, now preserved only as a ruin, was once a dynastic castle in the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel region. Located near Neufelden, it is a protected monument.

History+

The origins of Blankenberg Castle date back to the early 12th century, when it was owned by Count Eppo von Formbach around 1108. Later, under Engelbert II von Schönhering-Blankenberg, who was lord of the castle from 1155 to 1182, the fortress encompassed extensive lands along the Große Mühl river all the way to the Danube. Around 1191, Witiko von Prčice und Blankenberg married Engelbert II's widow, thereby acquiring a portion of the Blankenberg fiefs between 1192 and 1194, which were confirmed to him by the Bishop of Passau.
