Breisach Castle

The origins of Breisach Castle date back to the 12th century when it was built by Berthold V of Zähringen. In 1294, the Habsburgs took over the complex and had it further expanded. The castle received an upgrade in 1315 when it was elevated to an Imperial Castle. In the mid-16th century, specifically 1552, Lazarus von Schwendi was appointed castellan by Emperor Charles V, strengthening the fortifications until his death in 1583. In the 17th century, the castle suffered damage multiple times, including in 1633 during the siege by Rheingraf Otto Ludwig and again in 1638 after the Battle of Wittenweiher. During the War of the Polish Succession, French troops crossed the Rhine in 1733, after which Breisach was reinforced with Austrian soldiers who repelled all attacks.
