Brelen Castle

Brelen Castle, also known as Bredenol Castle, is a vanished hilltop castle on the Bennokopf southeast of Edelburg in the area of the present-day city of Hemer in the Märkischer Kreis. Remains of the former castle were placed under protection on December 19, 1986, and registered as an archaeological monument in the monument list of the city of Hemer.

It is assumed that the castle already existed in 1235, as a family named themselves after the place Bredenol at that time. The noble family of Bredenol was among the Arnsberg ministerials between 1281 and 1338.

According to the foundation remains, the former square stone keep had an internal dimension of 7.80 meters by 8 meters. The walls were 2.30 meters thick. Culm stone with mortar was used for construction. No breakthrough was found at ground level in the wall remains, so it is assumed that the tower had a high entrance.

The castle was not completely surrounded by a rampart and moat, as the terrain sloped steeply to the southeast of the castle building.
