Brelen Castle

It is presumed that Brelen Castle already existed in 1235, as a family named themselves after the locality of Bredenol around that time. The noble family of Bredenol served as ministeriales of the Counts of Arnsberg between 1281 and 1338. The preserved foundation remains suggest a square stone keep with internal dimensions of 7.80 by 8 meters. The walls were 2.30 meters thick and constructed from Culm stone with mortar. Since no ground-level openings were found, it is assumed that the tower was accessed via a high entrance. A continuous rampart and ditch were absent, as the terrain sloped steeply to the southeast of the castle.
