The castle remains of Bühringen, also known as Überkingen Castle, are those of a former spur castle. Its ruins today offer an insight into medieval defensive architecture in Baden-Württemberg.

History+

Bühringen Castle was built around 1250 by the Counts of Helfenstein. It served as the ancestral seat for their ministeriales, first documented in 1258 with the knights Albrecht, Ulrich, and Heinrich von Überkingen. In 1363, Hans von Obenhausen sold the castle to Count Ulrich von Helfenstein. Later, it became the retirement residence of Countess Maria von Helfenstein, Duchess of Bosnia and widow of Count Ulrich. After her death in 1405, the castle passed into the possession of the Imperial City of Ulm, which appointed a bailiff there. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was burned down and subsequently almost completely dismantled by citizens from Türkheim.
