Emichsburg Castle

The original castle complex, whose name has not been handed down, was probably built in the 12th century by the counts of the noble family Leiningen near the western edge of the Rhine plain. The village of Kleinbockenheim later developed around this fortification. In 1460, during the Mainz Diocesan Feud, the castle was destroyed after a ten-day siege by Elector Friedrich the Victorious of the Palatinate. Although Count Emich VIII restored Kleinbockenheim and its fortifications, Friedrich burned down the village again in 1471. However, Emich VIII had the complex rebuilt in the same year. His successor Emich IX of Leiningen-Hardenburg rebuilt the castle in 1502 and named it "Emichsburg" for the first time.
