Fürstenstein Castle
The castle remains of Fürstenstein are a former spur castle, located on a mountain spur above Zwingenberg in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg.
History+
Fürstenstein Castle was built around the year 1340 by the Archbishop of Mainz. It served as a counter-castle to the nearby Zwingenberg Castle. This construction was a reaction to the forced right of access to Zwingenberg Castle, which the Count of Württemberg, Palatine Count Ruprecht I, and Archbishop Heinrich von Virneburg of Mainz had enforced in 1338. As early as 1343, Fürstenstein Castle had to be demolished by royal decree.

Today, only a few wall remnants made of quarry stones are visible from the castle complex. These extend over several narrow plateaus. The remains of the castle ruin provide clues to a walled core castle with outbuildings and a neck ditch.
