Greifenfels Castle

Greifenfels Castle ruin, whose origins date back to the 13th century, was built around 1230/31 by Wulfing and Heinrich von Gurnitz. They received permission to construct this fortress on the grounds of Viktring Abbey directly from Pope Gregory IX. In 1315, the castle passed into the possession of the Auffensteiner family, before it was acquired by the Lords of Neuhaus in 1404 or 1408. After the Lords of Neuhaus completed the nearby Ebenthal Castle in 1566, Greifenfels was abandoned in 1588 in favor of their new residence. Since 1704, the ruin has been owned by the Counts of Goëss.
