Heidenburg Castle

The Heidenburg was likely built in the 9th or 10th century, during the Carolingian period. A tradition states it was supposedly erected in 843 under the rule of Louis the German. The complex primarily served as a refuge castle and, due to its elevated position, offered a wide view over the Rhine plain. It is unknown whether the castle was destroyed or fell into disrepair naturally; however, it was forgotten early on. It received its name mistakenly from the assumption that it was built by the Celts, who were considered pagan.
