In the Taunus between Bornich and Niederwallmenach in the Rhein-Lahn district of Rhineland-Palatinate, the remains of Heppenheft Castle are a medieval hilltop castle ruin. This 12th-century complex.

History+

The origins of Heppenheft Castle date back to the 12th century, with construction likely taking place around 1122. The Lords of Heppenheft are documented since 1158. The castle was built to control an important trade route. The family split into various lines. In 1335, Gerlach Grans von Heppenheft opened the castle to the Counts of Katzenelnbogen. The last known knight to care for the castle was Emmerich von Heppenheft in 1445.
